Bush and Barack Obama (once removed) The list above includes the closer, more significant relationships. Family trees, particularly those in a limited geographic area, tend to converge relatively rapidly and many family trees going back ten generations or more will connect to more than one dozen U.S. Presidents, if all female ancestors and their descendants are traced. This is why, for example, it is not mentioned that through Robert Wyngate of Sharpenhoe, Bedfordshire, J.Q. Adams and W.H. Harrison are eighth cousins. There are also numerous relationships by marriage which are not presented in this. For example, Richard Nixon was the father-in-law of Dwight Eisenhower's grandson. George Washington's half aunt married James Madison's half first cousin once removed. Woodrow Wilson married (as his second wife) the great-great-great-niece of Thomas Jefferson.

There have been eight presidents that were closely related to one another. John Adams was the father of John Quincy Adams. William Henry Harrison was the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, James Madison was a second cousin of Zachary Taylor and George H.W. Bush is the father of George W. Bush. There are many other more distant relationships which have been discovered.

A number of Presidents were distantly related to the previous President. For instance, James Madison (4th President) was an 11th cousin of Thomas Jefferson (3rd President) through their common ancestor of Ralph de Neville. Or how about Grover Cleveland (22nd and 24th President) who sandwiched Benjamin Harrison (23rd President). They were 13th cousins 1 time removed through their common ancestor of Sir Walter Blount. More recently you have Barack Obama (44th President) who is related to both George W. Bush (43rd President) and his father George H. W. Bush (41st President) . George W. Bush and Barack Obama are 11th cousins through their common ancestor of Samuel Hinckley. Ironically Samuel Hinckley is also a direct ancestor of John Hinckley Jr. who shot President Ronald Reagan.
