The United Kingdom initially was partial to the Confederate States of America because of their huge trade ties with the region. The Confederacy was the UK's primary source of cotton and the Union blockade on the Confederacy was preventing British Manufactures from operating at the highest probability. (During the American Civil War, the United Kingdom bought cotton from Egypt which was much more expensive.) However, when the Union made clear its intention to liberate the slaves in the Emancipation Proclamation, supporting the Confederacy became politically untenable. (The United Kingdom's population was very strongly anti-slavery by the 1860s.) Therefore, the United Kingdom remained neutral and tacitly supported the Union in the later years of the American Civil War.
