The ruining economy, foreclosures, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq made many Americans apathetic about their own government. Some believed the Republicans and the Democrats are just the same old thing.
The Republican Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Democratic Party. It is often called the Grand Old Party or the GOP. Founded in Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and modernizers, the Republican Party quickly surpassed the Whig Party as the principal opposition to the Democratic Party. It first came to power in 1860 with the election of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency and presided over the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Today, the party supports a conservative and/or center-right platform, with further foundations in supply-side fiscal policies and social conservatism. The Republican Party is currently the second largest party with 55 million registered voters as of 2004, encompassing roughly one-third of the electorate.[1] There have been nineteen Republican Presidents. Republicans currently fill a minority of seats in both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, hold a minority of state governorships, and control a minority of state legislatures. In the Presidential election of 2008, the party's nominees were Senator John McCain, of Arizona, for President and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for Vice President.
Its roots are in the debates over ratification of the Constitution in 1787-1789. The people who supported ratification organized and aided each other in securing passage. Once the Constitution was ratified they still held similar views and had similar interests so they naturally continued to work together to further their common goals.Federalist PartyThe Federalist Party did not begin as a political party. The Federalists were those Americans who supported the ratification of the new Constitution of the United States. Those who were against ratification called themselves Anti-Federalists. By the end of Washington's second term, two political parties had developed. Those who supported a strong central government called themselves Federalists, as the Constitution had created a "federal" system of government. The Democratic-Republicans believed that the states should have more power than the national government. Alexander Hamilton and John Adams were leaders of the Federalist Party. With the election of Jefferson, a leader of the Democratic-Republicans, in 1800, the Federalists lost most of their power and faded from the American political scene.
The Federalists and the Anti-Federalists who later became known as the Jeffersonians.
Senate Republicans were arguing against ratification of the Treaty of Versailles, because it would committ the US to be involved in the League of Nations. Involvement in the League of Nations would involve commitment of the US to participate in foreign wars, and based on the experience of World War I, they wished this not to happen. Instead they wanted the US to return to its traditional foreign policy of neutrality and isolation.
Republicans make money off of war so they WANT more wars !
Because they're politicians! Trust me on this: Republicans probably like to spend tax revenues more than Democrats do. They definitely like spending them on more expensive things, like wars and weapons that won't work.
Not necessarily. Many Republicans were elected to end wars that began under Democrats. I'd say if you want the real answer, it's: All wars are started by Republicrats. Both sides love it. This is mainly because it's all a charade at the administrative level.
UP TO A POINT! One can argue the present day Republican party owes a good deal to Alexander Hamilton, basically conservative, big on defense- strong courts, strong central govt... like Modern Republicans ( Hamilton called his party the Federalists) Democrats traditionally more broad populace, Man-in-The steet orientation, are or were reluctant to hike taxes, etc. The odd thing is the Democrats have been known to start more Us Involvement in Wars than the allegedly pro-defense Republicans. so it goes. Then there are Rebel or Hate parties such as Communists, American Nazis , Bundists, etc.
RENT WARS OF 1997 (NY) The rent wars of 1997 were fought between Democrats and Republicans. Republicans wanted to "end rent regulation" which regulation protects tenants from evictions, large rent increases and harassment by landlords. Democrats wanted to preserve rent regulation. The result was that, rent regulation laws were weakened in the battle as Republicans had the majority in the legislature. Consequently, many NY apartments have dropped out of the regulation system by exploiting legal loopholes - this is a benefit for landlords. Furthermore, regulated rents continue to increase more than they should in accordance with the Emergency Tenant's Protection Act's policy - another benefit for landlords. Another side effect is that Republicans lost many seats in the legislature. Though this is also attributable to the conduct of the Bush administration (2000 - 2008). The Democrats will have to prove that they are, indeed, the party that supports tenant rights when regulation laws come up for renewal again in a few years. Unfortunately, now that Republicans have lost clout the landlord lobby is funnelling money into Democrat campaigns which are gladly accepting the cash. So, our Democrat heroes may become the enemy pretty soon- let's hope that it's not too much of a sell-out for the Democrats. There is too much dirty money in this State. (2009)
Steps to figure out your party:Decide how you feel about taxes. Republicans generally support lower taxes across the board, which means they tend to favor lower spending on most government programs. Republicans also tend to favor deregulation, and policies that are considered pro-business, so they would try to lower the taxes of businesses and corporations. Democrats believe that the wealthiest and the biggest corporations should pay their fair share, and it is okay to ask them to pay higher taxes. Democrats tend to believe in spending more money on social programs and on helping the poor.Judge your dedication to individual and property rights. The Republican Party honors these rights and promotes the shifting of power to local communities and away from centralized government. But when it comes to social issues, Republicans believe it is okay to have the government decide whether a woman can have an abortion (and some candidates even opposes contraception) or whether gay people can get married. Democrats tend to be pro-choice and in favor of people making their own decisions about social issues such as abortion or Birth Control. And Democrats also believe the federal government does have a duty to help its citizens; many Republicans do not agree.Assess your feelings about gun control. The Republican Party opposes strong gun control legislation and supports the individual's right to bear arms. Democrats are divided on this issue: some Democrats are gun owners, some believe in gun control. Most Democrats share the view that we do need to tighten some of the laws to make it more difficult for criminals to own guns.Decide your position on crime. Republicans generally push for strong enforcement and tough laws against drug traffic and juvenile crime. And Democrats tend to support a more moderate position, including allowing the use of medical marijuana.Take a stand on defense. The Republican Party promotes a strong national defense. The Democrats do as well. But Republicans historically have tended to be more "hawkish" about wars and about preemptive invasions, such as the War in Iraq.Consider your feelings about abortion. The Republican platform is pro-life, while Democrats tend to support a pro-choice position.Get on the Republican Web sites and read the platform. If you find that you agree with the party's stand on most issues, you are probably a Republican. If you find you agree with the Democrats, then you are a Democrat. But you may find you see the good in certain positions form each party, in which case you might be an Independent and vote for whichever candidate you feel will do the best overall job.
Democrats mainly lived throughout the country. The party had been formed in 1812 and were paramount nationally and in the States prior to the Civil War. They favored States Rights generally and limited federal government. Republicans formed in 1856 and gradually replaced the Whig party. Their numbers increased with the influx of immigrants into the Northeast because people left the Democratic party fearful the immigration would bring too many Catholics to the country. The 1870's were a dynamic time for the United States of America. The West was still fighting Indian wars and Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were inventing. Women's rights were the topics of change in many arenas. Women lawyers were first given the right to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court in this period and Susan B. Anthony illegally voted in a Presidential election. Both the Democrats and the Republicans were under pressure from women and neither was rushing to embrace the cause. Economically, Republicans favored high tariffs to keep out foreign goods and rely on American industry and Democrats favored only enough tariffs to pay for their view of limited government.
People who join the Libertarian party are people who want lower taxes, less government spending, increased rights, pursue a foreign policy to avoid costly wars and costly alliances, they also oppose government control of marriage, believe in free speech, believe in the second amendment and generally want less government than either republicans or democrats. There are over 225,000 registered Libertarians and many more who vote Libertarian and who are not registered members.

The Republican party was formed on March 20, 1854, by anti-slavery Whigs who met in the upper Midwestern states to discuss the formation of a new party. The Republican party gained strength very quickly, as many people blamed the Kansas Border wars on the Democrats.
The ruining economy, foreclosures, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq made many Americans apathetic about their own government. Some believed the Republicans and the Democrats are just the same old thing.
