Eight US Presidents were/are left-handed:

  • James A. Garfield (R)
  • Herbert Hoover (R) (disputed)
  • Harry Truman (D) (may have been ambidextrous)
  • Gerald Ford (R)
  • Ronald Reagan (R) (switched to right hand for writing in school; perhaps ambidextrous)
  • George H.W. Bush (R)
  • Bill Clinton (D)
  • Barack Obama (D)
More Trivia In the 1992, 1996, and 2008 presidential elections, all major candidates were left-handed: H.W. Bush, Clinton, and Perot; Clinton, Dole, and Perot; McCain and Obama respectively.

The eight left-handed US Presidents constitute a disproportionate number of lefties of US Presidents. The average number of lefties worldwide is somewhere around 10% while 18.6% of US Presidents were left-handed. Another oddity is that none of the first 19 presidents were left-handed. This is probably because there was a stigma against being left-handed and children were forced to use their right hand.
