The previous answer was completely incorrect and riddled with outright falsehoods. Fascism, as an ideology, is a religion of the state with government control of virtually everything--no, fascism is not a conservative ideology--at all. Where most liberals today tend to confuse this issue, is that fascism also tends to include intense nationalism, which they confuse with the great divide between patriotic conservatives and liberals, who believe that they are citizens of the world, and dismiss patriotic behavior as "jingoistic."

We were taught Andrew Jackson was a small-govt president, but that is not true. He was the first to increase the # of govt employees per capita. "Evil Woodrow Wilson of the 1800's" - Glenn Beck
Among many others, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ulysses Grant, Lyndon Johnson are considered some of the most politically liberal Presidents in history.
The reason more historic presidents are not acknowledged as liberal is we were for the most part focused on conservative ideologies, even the old democratic party had a hard time with civil rights movements and other such seemingly "liberal" agendas. but keep in mind a great deal of actual foreward movement for minority's has occurred under republican administrations, including Lincoln himself.

Woodrow Wilson was the most liberal , he was the first Liberal Fascist president, also known as Progressive.
