Legal authority for LBJ to used whatever military force he thought he needed in Vietnam/led to war between Hanoi & Washington.
It was President Lyndon B. Johnson who increased involvement in Vietnam after the Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was signed into law in 1964.
Use whatever force necessary.
To use whatever force was necessary to protect US interests.
Allowed the President to use whatever force he deemed necessary to protect US interests in Vietnam.
Congress passed this resolution which gave President Johnson whatever measures were necessary to prevent harm to US ships.
Tonkin Gulf Resolution.
President Johnson asked congress for and received a resolution giving him power to use whatever was necessary to protect U.S. interests in Vietnam on August 7, 1964.
In August, 1964, President Johnson reported to the nation that American ships had been attacked by North Vietnam gunboats in the Gulf of Tonkin, in international waters. Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution giving the President the power to use whatever force necessary to protect American interests in the area.

It passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which granted President Lyndon B. Johnson the authority to assist any Southeast Asian country whose government was considered to be jeopardized by "communist aggression".
The "resolution" authorized the President to use whatever force he wished to protect US interests.
The Gulf of Tonkin resolution was passed on August 7, 1964. It gave Congressional approval to expanding the United States presence in Vietnam. The US Congress gave Johnson permission to take "all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression."
