Dr. Beeching was the person responsible for destroying British Rail in the 1960's with his short-sighted solutions to very real problems. He closed half of the railway lines, many of them could have been useful now as alternative routes during engeneering works etc.. Many branch lines that he closed served large villages that turned into towns in the 1970's and 80's with real needs for railway stations.

Beeching was not all bad

The Beeching era saw the introduction of the equal interval Inter City passenger train services, Freightliner container services and the breaking down of old railway company prejudices. Don't forget that 4,000 miles of railway had already been closed before Beeching came on the scene and lot a more was closed after he left.

Why do you call British Railways by that Beeching invention British Rail?
