The President who held the record far longer than anyone else was John Adams. He was the oldest former President for 198 years and 49 days, from August 1803 to October 2001! Ronald Reagan broke his record that month, and he added an additional two years and eight months to it before his passing in 2004 at the age of 93.
The second-oldest currently living former U.S. President is Jimmy Carter, who was born on October 1, 1924.
Here is the current top ten as of November 24, 2017, when George H.W. Bush passed Gerald Ford:
* At the times and places of the births of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, the Julian calendar was in use. The dates of birth shown are the Gregorian equivalents, or "new style".
In addition to being the oldest U.S. President ever for over 198 years, John Adams also held, for over 154 years, the record for the longest time as a living former U.S. President. That record was finally broken by Herbert Hoover on the 4th of July, 1958. Hoover held that record for over 54 years before Jimmy Carter broke it in September 2012. Hoover and Carter are the only two U.S. Presidents to have exceeded 30 years as a living former President. Gerald Ford would have if he had lived just an additional 25 days.
(updated Dec 2017)
The current record for oldest former U.S. President belongs to Gerald Ford, who lived to the age of 93 years and 165 days, 45 days older than the maximum age reached by Ronald Reagan two and a half years earlier.
The President who held the record far longer than anyone else was John Adams. He was the oldest former President for 198 years and 49 days, from August 1803 to October 2001! Ronald Reagan broke his record that month, and he added an additional two years and eight months to it before his passing in 2004 at the age of 93.
The oldest currently living former U.S. President is George H. W. Bush (George, "Sr."), who was born on June 12, 1924, 111 days before Jimmy Carter. Since February 14, 2015, George H. W. Bush has been the 3rd-oldest former President in U.S. history. Jimmy Carter has been the 2nd-oldest living former U.S. President since December 26, 2006 and the 4th-oldest former President in U.S. history since June 5, 2015.
John Adams now holds the #5 position, and at #6 is Herbert Hoover. Adams, Hoover, Reagan, Ford, Bush and Carter are the only former U.S. Presidents to have lived beyond age 90. Living former Presidents Bush (the elder) and Carter turned 90 on June 12, 2014 and October 1, 2014 respectively.

President Carter is still alive as of 14 December 2010.
Rutherford B. Hayes was the first president to have his voice recorded, but no recording of Hayes still exists today. There is one existing recording of his successor, Benjamin Harrison, which is the earliest existing known recording of a president.
Former presidents who are still alive are Jimmy Carter, George Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. They do NOT continue to earn the same full salary they made in office.
Depends how you define "Southern". If it means the former Confederacy, then Garfield, Harrison, Mckinley, T Roosevelt, and Coolidge. If the former "Border Slave states" are includedin the South, then only Garfield and Harrison.
Former presidents are not called "Mr. President" - at least, not by those who remember their history. Despite what you might see in the popular media, the correct form of address for a former president of the United States is to use the title of the highest post that he held before becoming president. This courtesy was established by George Washington; the only exceptions to this rule are for former presidents that go on to hold other posts after their administration has ended (Taylor, who became a Senator, and Taft, who became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court). Thus, William Clinton should be addressed as "Gov. Clinton", as he was governor of Arkansas. G. H. W. Bush should be "Ambassador Bush", as he was ambassador to the UN. G. W. Bush should be "Gov. Bush", for his term in Texas. And President Obama will become "Senator Obama" once he leaves office.
