The fort was built in 1812 to establish a position at the river junction and to promote the fur trade. Another purpose was to keep Indian lands free of settlers. In 1820 the first school in Northwest Territory was set up. In 1830 Dred Scott was purchased by John Emerson whose legal case will eventually go to the Supreme Court. As the area became more populated the army sold the fort for 90,000 in 1858.
