On the night of April 17, 1775 the Son's of Liberty were meeting in Concord and they knew that the British were gathering troops in Boston to soon march to find any weapons or powder that the colonials may have hidden. They hired Paul Revere, for 30 shillings, to ride if the troops came ashore at Charelstown. They did and Revere began his ride, but didn't finish it because he was arrested by the British patrol between Boston and Concord. Two men, Prescott and Dawes came along, saw Revere in trouble, and rode to Concord to warn the men meeting there. Later, that morning, the battle at Lexington happened and then the one at the Bridge of Concord.
The only reason we think of Revere and this event is because a 100 years AFTER it happened Longfellow wrote a poem called The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. In the poem he states that Revere called out "the British are coming." That alone is not something that would have happened because the people in the colonies thought of themselves as British.
Paul Revere and William Dawes rode from Boston to warn the Patriots by different routes. They got to Lexington and warned John Hancock. They were joined by Dr. Prescott as they traveled from Lexington to Concord. The British captured Revere and Dawes but Prescott evaded capture. Dawes being a physician, was able to talk the British out of taking his horse. Revere finally broke free of the British and went back on foot to help Sam Adams and John Hancock. Prescott reached Concord by 1:30 AM and warned the town.
Prescott and Dawes. Revere started out , but was arrested by a British patrol before he got to Lexington. The only reason we know about Revere is the Longfellow poem written in 1861 used his name. Longfellow did not mean to make his poem history, but that is the way it has been used. Longfellow was trying to make a point about patriots on the eve of the civil war.
The British troops moved on Lexington and Concord in an attempt to seize a reported arms cache, and to attempt the capture of John Hancock and Samuel Adams. The information obtained by the British concerning the existence of the arms and the whereabouts of Hancock and Adams was good, but the two patriots were warned of the British movement by Paul Revere, and the colonials chose to stand and fight rather than retire, thus starting the war for American Independence.
Although eyewitnesses disagree on how it happened and who fired first, the first shot of the Revolutionary War was fired at the Battle of Lexington, in the early morning of April 19, 1775.The 'battle" was actually a skirmish when British soldiers enroute to Concord came across armed colonial militiamen. After a brief exchange of fire, the Americans dispersed. It was not until later in the day that Minutemen, warned by Revere, Dawes, and others, routed a force of Redcoats at the Battle of Concord. These separate battles are often considered as a whole as the first open conflict in the war.
Paul Revere worked as a dentist, prior to his better-known career as a silversmith and hero of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He is best known for his "Midnight Ride" in which after receiving the symbol answering "One if By Land; Two if by Sea", he warned the Colonists about the British Army's approach.
