The name of the British spy that was hung for his involvement with Benedict Arnold was John Andre. Together, they were conspiring to surrender West Point and let it fall into British hands.

Why did Benedict Arnold betray his country?

Benedict Arnold betrayed America because his british wife wanted him home, he also wanted the money. Which he received little of after his huge help to the british. Benedict Arnold was a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and is known as a traitor to the United States forces and plotting to surrender the American fort at West Point, New York, to the British during the American Revolution. Arnold distinguished himself as a hero of revolution early in the war through acts of cunning and bravery in the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the Invasion of Canada (1775), the Battle of Valcour Island in Lake Champlain in 1776, the battles of Danbury and Ridgefield in Connecticut (after which he was promoted to Major General), and the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. He was wounded several times and inspite of his many successes, he was passed over for promotion by the Continental Congress because he was not trusted. Arnold also opposed the alliance with France. He became heavily indebted, and was accused of corruption. He also married a Loyalist girl, Peggy Shippen. Frustrated and disaffected, Arnold turned to treason. In September 1780, he formulated his scheme. If he had succeeded, British forces would have controlled the Hudson River valley and split the colonies in half. The plot was thwarted, but Arnold escaped to British forces. He received a commission and a small reward. The British gave him small commands, but did not trust him. After the war, he lived in Canada and Britain, dying poor and obscure in 1801. He didnt get the credit for the three wars he fought in and won.

Who was the British commander during the battle of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775?

Which battle of Fort Ticonderoga do you mean? 1758: British commander: Gereral James Abercrombie. 1776: British commander: General Carleton. 1777: British commander: General Burgoyne. 1777: British commander: Maj. Gen. William Phillips.

Who did The Continental Congress proclaimed the hero at Saratoga was?

General Horatio Howe (Gates) got the credit, but it was really Benedict Arnold. Before his defection to the British, Arnold was a courageous and skilled commander. A sad turnabout. Since he deserted, his monuments have been stripped and public praise stifled, but during the month-long campaign that is referred to as The Battle of Saratoga, he twice won decisive battles, once by cunning and once by conspicuous bravery. The second time, at the battle of Bemis Heights, during a charge so heroic it was practically suicidal, his horse was shot out from under him, crushing his leg. During that battle his troops killed five times the number of Burgoyne's troops than he lost.It was probably the feud with Howe that ultimately caused him to defect. Arnold was too proud, too unforgiving, too arrogant to stay in the chain of command with a general he thought inferior to himself. One note: The Battle of Saratoga was commemorated with a Day of Thanksgiving, Dec. 18, 1777, the first holiday thus named.

What did Arnold Benedict want?

Mainly money and a commission from the British. Arnold had remarried a 19 year old girl by the name of Peggy Shippen from an important Philadelphia family. She took part in the conspiracy to betray West Point. The plot had begun in Philadelphia in 1779 and was discovered in 1780. His motives were personal, not political. He was greedy always looking for money to keep up a life style his new wife was use to, but he couldn't afford. He also resented what he saw as a lack of appreciation by Congress and the government of Pennsylvania. He chose Joseph Stansbury a Loyalist shopkeeper to convey his messages to the British general Sir Henry Clinton. Arnold's demands for payments varied but in Aug of 1780 an agreement was made for him to be paid 20,000 pounds if it lead to the capture of West Point and 3,000 troops. The plot was discovered on Sept. 23, 1780 when papers were seized by the NY militia. Arnold fled and went to Clinton in NYC and he expected to be given honors for his talents. He was disappointed and never got his command because he wasn't trusted. He went to England in 1791 and died 10 years later.
