The Battle of Brandywine Creek was fought near Philadelphia on September 11, 1777. The British under General Wm Howe beat the Colonials, but unfortunately for him, the Colonial Army was still in a fighting condition. Howe went to Philadelphia hoping that an uprising of Loyalists would join him so that he could clobber the Colonial Army in Pennsylvania, thus spitting the Colonies in half. That never happened and Howe had effectively cut himself out of the War, leaving British forces under General Burgoyne without much needed reinforcements as he went into the Battle of Saratoga where they were soundly beaten.

The Battle of Brandywine, also known as the Battle of the Brandywine or the Battle of Brandywine Creek, was fought in Pennsylvania between the American army of Major General George Washington and the British-Hessian army of General Sir William Howe on September 11, 1777. The British defeated the Americans and forced them to withdraw toward the rebel capital of Philadelphia. The engagement occurred near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania during Howe's campaign to take Philadelphia, part of the American Revolutionary War.

Near Chadds Fort, Pennsylvania. Just outside of it, actually.
Though he won both battles, Gen Howe did not destroy Washington's forces at Brandywine Creek or Germantown. He spent the winter in Philadelphia, while Washington was a few miles away at Valley Forge. In so doing, he left British Gen John Burgoyne exposed as he came into the Battle of Saratoga where Burgoyne suffered a crushing defeat.
it made them lose, then win over all, yay
