Stephen Girard, apparently a Deist, was very wealthy and left a charitable trust for the education of orphans which provided that no cleric could ever proselytize on the property of the school and orphanage. Vidal, et al, were Girard's next of kin and they sought to have the trust declared void on the ground that it was anti-Christian. It would seem that their motive was greed, not piety. The division of church and state never came up. (Lee Edwards)
