Because he did not understood what it was and what it meant to the strangers standing before him. To him it held no significant meaning; his people did not have a language to write in. You might as well have handed him a shiny rock or a dictionary. He did not understand it was sacred to the Spanish, and even if he had known, I do not think he would have cared - his religion was based upon the Inti, the Sun God.
