A Unites States president can only serve as president for two terms of four years each. He served two terms (eight years), thus, he could not run for president again (by law). He served 1789-1797.

He felt that if he were to be President any longer, the U.S. would make the President a King, and he said that we would be turning our country of freedom into a Monarchy, which is what we wanted to escape from, and that is why we came to America for - to get away from the Monarchy. He resigned from presidency in the desire to not let ourselves turn the U.S. into a Monarchy, and repeat what we escaped from.

Washington was actively involved in the American revolution, in setting up the new government and serving as the first President, for over 20 years. He wanted to go home to his wife and his plantation. Also, he believed that it was bad for the country to have a President serve for more than two terms. He did what he could to start the new government, but he knew that it was time for fresh ideas and new approaches.
