The death of the federalist party had a lot to do with the fact that all of their great leaders had died and no one new stepped up. President Madison was pretty much the last outstanding federalist and he was shot in a duel. That shot is said to be the mortally wounding shot to the federalists. As for New England, it is all about the Hartford convention. There were there was some talk about secession, but it is mostly exaggerated by the history books. (they mostly talked about 2/3 vote in congress for war and tariffs)
