George Washington became President because he believed that there must be a higher ranking authority in the United States. The rest of the founders developed the office of President with George Washington in mind and congress basically drafted him to serve in that position. Washington left office after his second term believing it important that he walk away from office alive to show that it was not indeed a lifetime appointment.

George Washington was a leader at the Continental Congresses. He commanded the army that defeated the British in the American Revolution and chaired the Constitutional Convention. George Washington (1732-1799) was the most known and honored of Revolutionary heroes. As Commanding General of the American Continental Army, he defeated the British in several key battles, insuring the independence of the new nation.

He was a pre-war delegate from Virginia, and in 1787 presided over the Philadelphia convention that produced the new Constitution. He was respected and admired by virtually all of the leaders of the new United States. Because of his military accomplishments, he had the love and respect of the citizens, who felt he was the best man for the job. He was elected in 1789 and re-elected in 1792.
