There are actually several reasons outlined in the Declaration of Independence but the two biggest reasons were unlawful taxation without consent or proper representation and the use of military troops against civilians. Colonists also had grievances against the forced quartering of troops. King George would basically allow troops to take over a private residence and occupy it by force. King George basically violated every right listed in our (American) Bill of Rights.

Actually as a whole the colonists were pretty happy with the King and felt they were British. When the king began to over step his authority that is where the problem came from. The king saw the colonies as spoiled children that were having a temper tantrum so he treated them as such. If he had been less hard handed I think the revolution wouldn't have happened or it would have fizzled out. Our history has a lot of myths concerning this time. An example of this is the myth of high tea taxes. The tax on tea was lowered, but the men who smuggled in Dutch tea were unhappy because the cost of their tea was higher than the British when the tax was lowered. This was an economic fight.
American colonists did not think that they were being treated fairly by Great Britain.
They thought that they were being treated unfairly because of the Tea Act, The Stamp Act, The Intolerable Acts, etc. Britain would not allow them to have independence and become there own country so there only option was to go to war.
Great Britain placed heavy taxes on the colonies.
Following the Seven Years War with the French the British had a large debt, which they believed the colonies should hold the large of the burden due to the war being in the colonies and as such increased the taxes, additionally the Proclamation of 1763 prevented settlers from settling Indian land which they thought they should be able to especially after the war, additionally the British left a small standing army of about 10,000 on the colonial border which the colonist disliked.
The colonist were not being recognized in parliament and no longer lived in England...........basicly the wanted a better goverment. The King was unfairly taxing the colonist which meant that they were loosing money to the king and becoming poorer.
