At first people started to move to the west is because they wanted free land, to find gold, elbow room, cotton from Texas, starting a new life, having an adventure, farming and agricultural lands, privacy, animals, Manifest Destiny, & jobs.

Because there it was an article in some old newspaper between 1800 and 1900 that say "hey boy do you wanna get your own land for free, find gold and treasures, if you do then move west boy, move WEST". After that, many people moved west but some of them were not so lucky or proficient to do it, so they died or they just didn't get there until they created a special method to move to the west (not sure! something like that though).....

it depends on the time period but the biggest one has to be the California gold rush. it happened around 1849 (ergo the 49ers) people discovered gold and started moving out west but very few actually made it big. maybe as little as 1%.

By moving from the densely populated East to the sparsely populated West, people could obtain land much more easily. Homesteading got you free land in abundance.
