Many people chose to be loyalists because to for independence would be treason. These people were basically law-abiding citizens. Others had profitable businesses trading with England and hoped to avoid disruptions in shipping. Others wanted to avoid war; and some just felt that America was not ready for independence yet. Finally, some felt a religious duty to the King because of passages in the Bible that instruct Christians to be loyal to their kings and leaders.
