George Washington risked his money, his prestige and even his life to be on the forefront of the American revolution. After independence was declared, he assumed the command of the Colonial army. The men were largely untrained and came from all the different colonies and had to whipped into a fighting unit. Many enlisted for only a short time and so constant replacements were needed. Moreover, supplies were scarce. The colonial government found it hard to collect taxes and the colonies often did not provide their share of supplies. But Washington did what had to be done, kept the army together, kept after the suppliers, borrowed money and won the long war over the well-trained and well-equipped British army and its mercenaries. Moreover, he was noted for his high standards and moral conduct. He was helped write the constitution, was unanimously elected president and could have served for life, but refused to serve more than two terms. The US government was a radical invention in its time, and might have failed early, but Washington showed that it worked, setting many good precedents for the future.

During the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington was the leading general against the British. Despite the fact that the British had skilled and well trained troops, and could add to their forces because of their navy, Washington was still able to absorb punishment and keep the war going. He was able to retreat as required and did not engage in major battles where he saw that the odds were against him. He was at the battle of Yorktown, where the British were cut off from their navy by the French navy. Hemmed in, the British could not advance or retreat, thus their surrender was the only option.

Washington was a founding father of the United States. He didn't write the important documents that are the foundation of the country, but he was the commander of the American forces against the British, he was the president of the constitutional convention, and the first President of the United States. As the first president he set the tone for the future people in the office. He could have become a king, but instead he made the office a place for a leader. His insights into the minds of men and the greed they face still are true today. So, yes, he was a patriot because he was a man who believed firmly in the ability of man to govern himself and to decide what the future will be through the people that they elect to office.
