The election of 1824 was the only election to be decided by the House of Representatives because no candidate received a majority of the electoral vote. The US had become a one party government but the party had 4 candidates that received electoral votes.

One reason the presidential election of 1824 was unusual was because all of the people running were from the same party. Another thing that was unusual was that the results had to be decided by the House of Representatives because none of the candidates had won the majority of the electoral college.

In this election, no candidate received a majority of electoral votes, so by law, the House of Representatives chose the President and they picked John Quincy Adams, who was second in both popular and electoral votes to be President. This happened because a third candidate, Henry Clay, was able to persuade the congressmen from the states that had supported him to go for Adams. This action looked like a deal because Adams later appointed Clay to be his Secretary of State and it seemed that without a deal, Clay would have favored Jackson since both were from the West and had similar interests.
