Ancient Rome had several three forms of government during the 1,200 years of its existence. It had a monarchy for 244 years (753-509 BC). It then became a republic for 82 years (509-27 BC) which was headed by two annually elected consuls. The republic was replaced by absolute rule by emperors for 503 years (27 BC- 476 AD).
