From what I understand about arete...the concept of greatness in all things...the Trojan Glaucus and Diomedes of the Greeks are meant to exemplify heroism and humanity.
When the two meet on the battlefield, Glaucus tells the story about how he descends from Bellerophon. When Diomedes realizes that his grandfather Oeneus hosted Bellerophon, their forefathers are friends of old.
Diomedes and Glaucus must also be friends. (Another concept stemming from arete.) They exchange gifts and decide not to fight each other.
Diomedes
He was in a hissy fit because his commander King Agamemnon had taken over his girlfriend Briseis.
Agamemnon was forced to return his lover Chryseis to end the plague, and took Achilles' concubine Briseis as his own. Enraged at the dishonor Agamemnon had inflicted upon him, Achilles decided he would no longer fight.
The first rule of Fight Club is that you do not talk about fight club. You may not say anything that has to do with it because that is the first rule of the fight club.

Fight. More details can be found in book 12 of the Iliad, which, apparently, you were supposed to read and didn't. I suggest you do.
