Greek theatre grew out of festivals for the god Dionysus. Aeschylus created the play, and at first, there were just tragedies, but soon comedy evolved from this. Plays were shown at festivals, and all the performers were men.

Thespis is considered the first playwright and the first actor. Aeschylus added the second actor. Sophocles added the third.

It has its origins in the festivities for the greek god Dionysous. A chorus sang a praise to the god (dithyramb), later dithyramb was used and for other gods or heroes. Also here we find the first masks and disguise costumes (they were dressed as goats (satyres)).

Drama began in 5th Century Greece as competitions. They were held during festivities to celebrate Dionysus, the god of wine and wine making, the grape harvest, ritual madness, and religious ecstasy.

To trace the exact origin of Greek Drama is a challenging task for philologists. However, the eccentricity of the Greek theater is often approved beyond doubt.

The Greek theater is said to have evolved when plays were performed during the celebrations of the festival of God Dionysus, the Greek God of wine and ecstasy. They had not more than three actors, all males who wore thick, colorful cloths and the musket over their legs. The most important feature of Greek Drama, however, was the trend of wearing masks which generally depicted two things, their age and their mood. The actors would survive with their sheer ability to remain tremendously audible since they had to render their service to an audience of as large as fifteen to twenty thousand people.

This is how theater primarily evolved in Greek concept.
