Roman servants were slaves and lived in slave quarters behind the master's house. These were like little cells with a bed. I have seen some of these rooms in Pompeii and they were very simple without doors.

An insula was a small apartment block where poor people lived. Wealthy Romans often rented out their front rooms as shops. Rich Romans houses were usually large. Cubicula were small rooms often used as bedrooms, they were only finished with a sleeping bag, couch and a small chest. The Romans liked to be enclosed in there market square.
