ancient Rome was powerfully affected by its geography. Being located on seven hills enabled the Romans to defend themselves from their earliest enemies. With these seven hills located astride the Tiber River, the Romans were able to control inland trade -- which made them wealthy. Since the Tiber flowed into the Mediterranean Sea, the Romans were necessarily a seafaring people, both for trade and for military purposes. And that their city was founded in the center of the Italian peninsula meant that they were well-placed to dominate the peoples both to their north and to their south.
Rome's location favoured the growth of a big city. Rome was the product of the unification of settlements of a number of hills. People liked living on hills because they were easier to defend from raids. The hill and the valleys between them offered ample space for population growth. The volcanic rock of the hills gave good building material. Rome was also on the only Ford on the river Tiber, which made her the main north-south communication and trading centre in the region.
In the 4th and part of the 3rd centuries BC, Rome's geographic position made her vulnerable. She was attacked by neighbouring peoples, the Sabines, the Volsci and the Aequi and, at times, Etruscan cities. She spent this time defending herself and often fighting on two fronts. However, this strengthened the state ability to organise the army efficiently and to fight on more than one front at time, which proved useful to Rome later, when she expanded into Italy.
When Rome expanded around the Mediterranean, Italy offered a good geographic and strategic position as it was between the western and eastern basins of the Mediterranean
The Roman culture is largely based off the ideas of the Greek and Etruscan civilizations. This is because of the proximity to these civilizations. Also being close to them meant they were early targets in Rome's conquests, first removing Greek, Etruscan and Samnite peoples from Italy and then moving to annex other neighbours such as Gaul and Carthage. Since they were on the Mediterranean they developed a strong navy and trading lanes which impacted the development of the Romans greatly.
Comparison of Ancient Greece and Ancient RomeAncient Greece and ancient Rome may be compared in many ways, including in terms of the position of women in society, geography and the ramifications of geographical differences, and government. Teleology is almost the same too. They also believe in god and the will pray them. FROM: http://ancienthistory.about.com
There was Ancient Rome before present day Rome right? So - eventually, Ancient Rome started slipping away and archeologists just built over Anciet Rome. That kept happening until they had present day Rome and Ancient Rome - but Ancient Rome was underground

The geography of ancient Rome is the same as that of modern Rome. It lies in a hilly area half way between the Apennines (a mountain chain which runs through the Italian peninsula) and the coast and on the banks of the River Tiber.
