Legalism is a Chinese philosophy that puts the need for order above human concerns. It stressed the need for rulers to become more concerned with the practical elements of governing and to dismiss pious and impossible ideals like tradition and humanity. As a result, totalitarian principles were enforced in an effort to provide the people with a strong government. The theory later influenced Chinese political theorist, Tung Chung-Shu.
