During the period of the Roman Republic Romans sculpture was portraiture (busts). With rule by emperors, the Romans adopted the full body statues of the Hellenistic style of the Greeks. They did not try to imitate the Greek sculpture because of the perfection of Greek sculpture. They hired Greek sculptors of commissioned reproductions of the statues of the Greek masters.
