Many societies were too simple or primitive to explain why things happen, say, the sun traveling across the sky. They would then think of something simpler than the rotation of the earth around the sun. Like Helios,(the Greek sun god) in his golden chariot pulling the sun across the sky every 24 hrs. So they would make many, or one, different god(s) that all had different attributes, like Athena, the godess of wisdom, to explain natural or supernatural occurances in their environment.
