The Elder Muses were three or four Titan goddesses, daughters of Gaia and Ouranos;

Melete (Practise)

Aiode (Song)

Mneme (Memory)*

Mnemosyne (Memory)

*This goddess is also sometimes said to be Mnemosyne.

The Nine Muses most familiar are are called the Olympian Nine; said most commonly to be daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne or again, of Gaia and Ouranos. Here, I have included a translation to their names as well as what they were muse of.

Clio (Make-Famous, Celebrate) - history

Urania (Heavenly One) - astronomy

Melpomene (Celebrate with Song ) - tragedy

Thalia (Rich Festivity, Blooming) - comedy

Calliope (Beautiful-Voice) - epic poetry

Erato (Lovely, Beloved) - lyric poetry

Euterpe (Giving Much Delight) - music

Terpsichore (Delighting in Dance) - dance

Polyhymnia (Many Hymns ) - choral poetry

Younger Muses, these muses are least known, but are the reason why Apollo is associated with the Muses at all, they are the daughters of Apollo and muses of the lyre which is one of Apollo's many attributes.

Nete (Lowest note of the Lyre)

Mese (Middle Note of the Lyre)

Hypate (Highest Note of the Lyre)

Counted among the Muses are also mentioned;

Kephiso

Apollonis

Borysthenis

Arche

Thelxinoe

Polymatheia

Neilo

Tritone

Asopo

Herptapora

Akhelois

Tipoplo

Rhodia

However these are just as likely titles of the Muses, alternate names, or simply undefined personalities behind the meaning of the Greek word used.
