The Sun, alternatively Horus (this name and the others are tied closely to the roayl line), Ra (at the rising), and Atum (at the setting) at times was to break forth from an egg. It symbolizes an act of eternal regeneration which was very important to the ancient Egyptians. The egg was probably confused at times with the other symbol for the sun in iconography, an eye (specifically the eye of Amun, the creator, according to the earlier traditions.)
