I had to go in and look this up and found out that it was the Egyptians. They used mallow root sap that was mixed with honey, grains, and baked into cakes. It was a crime for anyone who wasn't a god, nobility or pharaoh to eat it.

Is a marshmallow a food or a candy?

Yes, it's both because it can be a treat (candy) and it can be food (sweet potatoes). All candy is food. Take this for example. A butterfinger is food because it has flavor and it can take up space in your stomach.
