The Romans had about the same standard type of pet that we do, but dogs and cats were thought of differently. Dogs were used for their utility such as guard dogs rather than for household pets. Cats were rarely kept except after the conquest of Egypt, when the cat's utility became known. They were very fond of birds and kept a large variety. Talking ravens were popular. One fellow even had a lamprey eel, complete with jewelry as a pet. Needless to say he was a wealthy exception.
