The ancient Egyptian language has many hundreds of words starting with the letter d. Just a few are:

  • dsr..........holy, sacred
  • drf..........writing, script
  • dbt..........brick, ingot, slab
  • db...........hippopotamus
  • dwAt.......the Underworld
  • dmt.........knife
  • dfdf.........to drip
  • dq...........flour, powder
  • dnsw.......weights for a fishing net
  • dns.........heavy
  • dSr.........red
  • dpy.........crocodile

All of these words were written without the vowels, which were not included in hieroglyphs so we can never know how they were correctly pronounced.

The word dbt (a brick), after a long and complicated history, became the modern word "adobe" - a mud brick. The word dsr (red) is well-known for its use as the Egyptian word for "desert": dSrt (often written Dashret today).
