  • The stymphalian birds- man eating birds with bronze claws, beaks, and wings; has poisonous excrement; afraid of loud noises
  • the augean stables- not been cleaned for 30 years and housed 1000 cows
  • the Cretan Bull- firebreathing bull
  • The Diomedean Mares- man eating horses owned by Diomedes
  • The Golden girdle of Hippolyta- a belt that holds weapons
  • the red cattle of Geryon- very beautiful; owned by a monster of 3 upper bodies

The eleventh labor of Hercules was getting the apples of Hesperides which were a gift by Hera to Zeus. They were guarded by a dragon with one hundred heads and the nymphs that were the daughters of Atlas. Hercules had to fight Ares, but Zeus broke the fight up with a thunder bolt. Then he had to get the sea-god Nereus to tell him where the apples were. Then he was challenged by two of the sons of Poseidon to a Wrestling match. Then Hercules found Prometheus and killed the eagle that was eating Prometheus' liver. Prometheus told Hercules the secret. Hercules had to have Atlas go for the apples while Hercules held the earth. When Atlas returned with the apples, Hercules asked Atlas to hold the earth while he put some padding on his shoulders. Once Atlas took the earth back, Hercules ran off with the apples. So Hercules had completed his task and he gave the apples to Athena to return to the garden.

Originally there were only 10. They were:

Kill the Nemean Lion

Destroy the Lernaean Hydra (which was disallowed because he had help)

Capture the Ceryneian Hind

Capture the Erymanthian Boar

Clean the Augean Stables (also disallowed because he was paid)

Kill the Stymphalian Birds

Capture the Cretan Bull

Round up the Mares of Diomedes

Steal the girdle of Hippolyta

Herd the cattle of Geryon.

Because two of the previous tasks were disallowed, Eurystheus added:

Fetch some Golden Apples

Capture Cerberus
