Perseus was given a sword that couldn't be broken by the Gorgon's scales, no matter how hard they were( from Hermes) and a shield and a knapsack ( from Athena).

Hermes, also known as mercury guided him to the gray sisters, who in exchange for their eye, told him how to get the the nymphs of the north. Here he got a sack that would grow to fit anything that was put into it, a pair of winged sandals that would allow him to fly, and a hat that would make him invisible. With these gifts and the sword of Hermes, he set of to kill Medusa, before he got there Athena "arrived" and gave him her breast-plate, which was actually a highly reflective shield.
