The Egyptian Book of the Dead is a collection of texts written on papyrus, which includes spells and instructions designed to help the deceased to overcome obstacles in the afterlife. Included are spells to help one move freely in the daylight, rest from the physical agricultural toil of Egyptian daily life, access paradise, and so on.

What collection of spells was buried with the mummies?

The Book of the Dead was a book of spells buried with the deceased for their use in the afterlife. There are 192 known spells, but there isn't a manuscript that contains all of them in one place. These spells would protect the mummy's soul from evil spirits or monsters in and when traveling to the after life. The book was not only a collection of spells, but also a guide to the afterlife and what the buried person would have to face. The book of the dead was the collections of spells buried with a mummy in later times in Egypt. The spells told you what to do in order to get into the Egyptian "heaven". You had to pass a variety of tests eg.in the weighing of the heart, Ma'at would way your heart against one of her own feathers. If your heart was lighter than the feather (meaning that it was free of sin) you were free to carry on to the next task. However, if your heart was heavier, it would be fed to Ammut, a scary Egyptian goddess, who resembles a monster.
