What did Alex Haley do that made him famous in black history?

He wrote the famous epic book called Roots, about African slaves in early America, which was made later into a successful TV miniseries, which not only illuminated the state of African Americans to a largely ignorant public but also employed scores of black actors, something that was rarely done at that time. A very powerful book that needed to be written in light of the civil rights movements and racial tensions in the 70's. He reaearched for a decade and so historically it is quite accurate.
