In battle, the Roman soldiers would kill those who fought against them. Afterall, they were the enemy. After the battle, depending on their orders, they would either enslave or continue killing them. Another post battle alternative was to mutilate them as Julius Caesar did to one of the towns in Gaul that revolted against him. He had his men cut off the hands of all the men in the town. Then too, depending on circumstances, the town and its people could be spared or simply given a heavy fine to pay.
