In an age where everything had to be painstakingly done by hand, work was something that occupied most people 24/7 all through the year. There were no theme or national parks or other entertainments to visit, the idea of a 'holiday' was unknown anyway, so the best thing you could have was a rest period where you could have a siesta or sit around and talk with your family or friends. Only a few privileged people could afford the time and luxury of having a hobby. And travel with all its dangers was only undertaken when you really had serious business to attend to elsewhere.
