After the Persian wars, Athens decided they needed allies in case the Persians came back and tried again. So they got together with other democracies and formed a mutual defense organization called NATO.. I mean the Delian League. However the United States... I mean Athens has the biggest military machine, so it wasn't long before the league became an occupation of Nato countries by American forces. Wait, I mean an occupation of Delian cities by Athenian forces.

The Athenians were arrogant and greedy, so the league soon devolved into Athens forcing all the others to pay for the Athenian army to "protect" them from the evil Soviet Union... I mean the evil Persian Empire.

Some neighbors who were not part of the league became alarmed at the imperialization of the league under Athenian management. So they formed their own defense league called the Warsaw Pact. I mean...um... the Peloponesian League, under the leadership of the godless comunists of Sparta. Well maybe Lycurgus-ists instead of Marxists. Anyway the Spartans believed that citizens were property of the state, while all not-citizens were slaves.

The principle difference between the 5th century BC and the 20th century AD is that the Spartans won, and held huge portions of Greece in virtual slavery until the Thebans whupped their butts in the battle of Tegyra (375 BC). The Theban army was primarily homosexual, the 300-man Sacred Band was made up of 150 pairs of lovers. As a result of Theban love of freedom, instead of taking over Sparta's empire, they actually freed everyone from Spartan overlordship and let them all govern themselves. They restored democracy to most of Greece, which lasted until it was all conquered again by Philip of Macedon a few years later. (The battle of Chaeronea, where he defeated the Sacred Band, was 338 BC)
