Icarus was the son of Daedalus, the master craftsman who designed the Minotaur's labyrinth. Daedalus had fallen into disfavour with King Minos after he invented a means by which the queen was able to copulate with a bull. To escape from his exile on Crete, Daedalus made wings from feathers bound with wax for himself and his son. Despite his father's warnings, Icarus was so rapt the splendor of flight that he went too near the sun and his wings melted. He plunged from the sky and perished in the sea which now bears his name, the Icarian sea.

First of all, Icarus is not a god. But what part he played in mythology? His father, the famous inventor, was banished from Athens, capital of Greece. Minos, a king, asked him if he could make a maze for his wife's son, the minotaur. Daedalus agreed. When the maze was finished, Minos locked Daedalus up in a tower with his young son Icarus. The Daedalus realized how to escape. He built two pairs of wings, one for icarus and one for himself. Finally they flew off into the sky. But daedulus's wings had their fatal flaw: too close to the sun the heat would melt the wax that held the wings together. Fly too close to the sea: the wings would get laden with water and they would drown. Daedulus warned icarus of this. Icarus, exhilarated at being free at last, flew too close too the sun forgetting his father' warning. By the time Icarus remembered, he was already falling, wax dripping down his arms. Daedulus called Icarus's name but alas, no avail for the sea had already gobbled him up.
