The Olympians are the ancient Greek Gods. Their seat of power was said to be atop Mt. Olympus, and hence, they are called the Olympians.

The major Olympians
  • Zeus god of the sky, also the leader of the gods. Even though he was married to Hera, he had children with other mortals, gods, and nymphs. Some of him most famous children with other people are Heracles and Orion.
  • Poseidon, god of the sea with his wife Amphrite.
  • Hera, the goddess of marriage and birth.
  • Ares, God of War and Aphrodite's lover.
  • Aphrodite, goddess of love. She, unlike the other gods, has no duties and exists only to be admired and loved. She was born when a drop of Uranus blood hit the ocean.
  • Hermes, god of messengers, thieves and travelers.
  • Apollo, god of the sun and Artemis' twin brother. His father was Zeus, and his mother was Leto.
  • Artemis, goddess of the moon and Apollo's twin sister.
  • Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Persephone was her daughter, but was kidnapped by Hades and because she ate food from the Underworld (pomegranate seed) she must go back to there half a year. While she is there, her mother weeps and it is winter.
  • Athena, the virgin goddess of war, wisdom and crafts. One day, while Zeus was expecting a child from him and Thetis, the Titaness of wisdom, he heard that the child would be greater than him. He then turned Thetis into a fly and swallowed her. That is how he gained his great wisdom. Later, he developed a headache and asked Hephaestus to crack open his skull. He did, knowing he could not hurt a god. Athena emerged in full battle armor.
  • Hephaestus, god of the forge and fire, husband of Aphrodite. He is lame and crippled because his mother Hera threw him off Mt. Olympus.
  • Dionysus, God of wine. His name means born twice.

Hades is the God of the Underworld with his wife Persephone. He is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon, but does not have a throne on Mt. Olympus. Hence, he is not an Olympian.

Some mythological HistoryPoseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Demeter and Zeus were the sons and daughters of the Titan king Kronos and Rhea. Kronos heard that they would would be more powerful than him, so he swallowed them as they came out. However, Rhea replaced the last one (Zeus) with a rock and hid him away. Many years later, Zeus came back to his father's house, disguised as a stranger and gave him a mixture of wine and mustard, making him vomit the other Olympians who had lived in their father's stomach undigested. Later there was a war between the Titans and the new Gods. Zeus freed the Cyclopes who made thunderbolts for him to hurl. The Olympians won, and Kronos was chopped to pieces with his scythe and was flung to the Tartarus. He cannot die, so he is undergoing punishment in the Field of Punishment. Some more interesting factsEven though Apollo is the sun god, Helios drives the chariot of the sun and Selena, another Titan, drives the chariot of the moon. All of the Gods are related. Every God can become angry, love, and show emotions the same as we can. In fact, as the myth goes, the Titan Prometheus made us in the likeness of the gods.

An Olympian is a God or Godess living on Mount Olympus, this is having to do with Greek Mythology. The only exception is the god Hades, he would rather spend his time in the Underworld than on Mount Olympus.
