Felucca

Answer: the word "felucca" comes from the Italian name of a lateen-rigged sailing vessel and it certainly was not used by the ancient Egyptians. Similarly the modern Arabic word dhow was not used at that time.

The Egyptians relied heavily on boats for transporting animals, goods and people by river, so they were familiar with all aspects of river craft and probably had different words for different types.

In hieroglyphs (which did not record the vowels), words for boat include:

mXnt (a ferry boat)

m't

mX'

sHyt (boat with a cabin)

s'tw (a towing-boat)

sktw

mrt

kAi' (Nubian boat)

mk

aHAt (warship)

dpt (large boat)

imw

xmntyw (large boat)

shrt

kbnt (large boat)

The English letters A and i are used to represent Egyptian consonants that do not exist in English.
