Mythology has two real purposes (1) to explain events and natural occurences that the people could not explain, for example the story of Arachne explained the origin of Spiders and Kokopelli explained the origin of children born out of wedlock (2) they are also used to influence people, for example Santa Claus keeps children in line While the powerful beasts of Greece kept people from straying.
A myth is a story made up to provide an answer to a question for which there is no known reason. In an era before scientific knowledge, it was a convenient way of providing answers.
Unfortunately today things haven't changed much. Even though we now have scientific answers to problems, many still cling to these fairy stories and unbelievable religious explanations, rather than accept the scientific/rationalist answers.
