The argument between arachne and Athena was a story of pride. This was because when Athena found out that a human was claiming to be far greater than she in the art of spinning, she became furious, stating that nobody was better than she. So she went down to earth disguised as an old women, and she challenged arachne. They both had the same quality work, but arachne had put bad images of gods and goddesses, which didn't please Athena. So, Athena turned arachne into a spider, saying that now, she could spin as much as she wants. (That's why they are called "arachn"-ids)
