Narcissus, the son of Cephisis, was supposedly a handsome young man. The oracle had said that if he never recognized his true self, he would live a long and happy life. A woman called Echo fell madly in love with him, but as he did not return her love, she faded away until only her her bones and her voice remained. Seeing this, Nemesis, the goddess of vengeance, became angry, and caused Narcissus to fall in love wth his own reflection. He pined away for his image in a pool of water and was transformed into the flower that bears his name.
