One version of the myth says he discovered the city of Mycenae. In this version Perseus was travelling with Andromeda, the girl who he would soon marry, on Pegasus, the winged horse. They were in search of a new city where they could start a life together. On the way, Perseus dropped his sword and decided to found a town where it landed.
Others say he gained ownership of Mycenae through trading kingdoms with his cousin Megapenthes for Argos. This was due to Perseus' guilt about accidentally killing his grandfather, Acrisius, former king of Argos, and inheriting the throne.
