The religions the Olmec practiced was similar to that of the Mayans. There was a need for shamans and priests, as well as the ruler of the kingdom. The importance of the rulers was to prove their legitimacy as a ruler, they were deities and supernatural people.

I believe they had their own religious beliefs. They pre-date all current organized religions, so they were not christian/muslim/etc. Their religion could have been very similar to Mayans and Egyptians, who may have derived from the same ancient advanced culture such as Atlantis.
